A shadowy Auckland figure is behind the online success of a quirky new national anthem sung by a fictitious central Otago men's choir.
The clip of God defend the All Blacks by the Matakanui Men's Choir shows everyone from James Cook, Sir Edmund Hillary and Michael Joseph Savage singing the national anthem with All Black names substituted.
An animated James K. Baxter, Helen Clark and even David Bain belt out verses such as "Bernie Fraser, Michael Jones/Frank Bunce, Grant Fox, Joe Rocokoko/ Zinzan Brooke, Richard Loe/ Mils Muliaina".
The video features on popular networking websites You Tube and My Space. It is for sale on New Zealand online music site Amplifier and has proved popular on Fairfax news websites.
The video is backed by a Mattakanui Men's Choir website detailing its formation in 1958 so Central Otago men could "pursue their shared joy of singing".
But no one in the former goldmining town and small farming settlement 11km north-west of Omakau has heard of the choir and its leader, "wool classer Trev Smith"_ because they do not exist.
Yesterday "Trev Smith" revealed that while he grew up in Central Otago, he now lived in Auckland, where he was involved in web design and music.
The song's creator, who did not want to give his real name, said the idea for an All Blacks-inspired anthem occurred at a party.
Several months ago he got 20 friends and acquaintances together, hired an Auckland school hall and recorded the new anthem. He said initially the video featured pictures of the named All Blacks but he decided to take the idea a step further with a video featuring famous New Zealanders.
He wanted to remain anonymous because not everyone would appreciate making fun of the anthem or national icons.

Malheureusement pour nous, l'auteur de cette magnifique chanson (accessible mais quand on ne maitrise pas la langue de Shakespeare!) prefere garder l'anonymat afin d'empecher toute remontrance pour 'utilisation malsaine de l'hymne'...
