Update for the upcoming weeks

as you all figured out (i guess), my computer at home joined my laptop in computers' heaven -may they both rest in peace...

from what i know now, i'll be able to update until thursday april 3rd ONLY, for after it's uni spring break (and it lasts 2 weeks)
a new computer will be order as soon as possible (after the mourning of our first computer -6y! which may count as dog years...) and you'll see by yourself when i'm back

though i have these issues, i still have an internet access (though complicated) i.e. i can read my mails but can't publish pics.

i will try my best to update with links and everything (for this weekend, there is no problem as our men in black & red are off!)

sorry from Mary*L, also known as the official black cat for her computers :(

Crusaders vs. Hurricanes (preview and video and other links)

http://www.stuff.co.nz/4454163a1823.html

Rough and tumble in Canes-Crusaders matches
The Press Friday, 28 March 2008

Off the field they are mates. But on it, they can scrap like cats bundled up in a sack.
There is something about Crusaders-Hurricanes matches -- especially at Wellington's Westpac Stadium -- that make the players cranky.

In 2004 Jerry Collins knocked Chris Jack senseless with a high tackle and in 2006 tempers again flared when Neemia Tialata pinned Richie McCaw to the bottom of a ruck with one paw around his throat. Later a frustrated Collins threw the ball at McCaw's head.

Tonight's fixture in Wellington is the most keenly anticipated Super 14 match played between two New Zealand sides this season, with the Hurricanes eager to topple the unbeaten Crusaders before they head into next weekend's bye.

McCaw says he is never apprehensive about bashing his All Blacks team-mates and friends, instead stating it can be used as motivation.

"It can sometimes be easier. If you know guys well, you want to get one over them. That's always been the case when you play against mates. You go hell for leather and all sorts of things go on out on the field. But as soon as the whistle goes, it's over."

The individual match-ups are keenly anticipated and the All Blacks selectors will use them to gauge players' form as they ponder their mix for the tests against Ireland and England in June.
McCaw, Kieran Read and Mose Tuiali'i will contest the loose ball and bulk up the defensive lines against Chris Masoe, Jerry Collins and Rodney So'oialo, locks Ali Williams and Brad Thorn will measure themselves against Craig Clarke and Jason Eaton and hooker Corey Flynn comes up against Andrew Hore.

For in-form halfback Andy Ellis it is an opportunity to prove to Hurricanes fans he was a worthy selection ahead of Piri Weepu at the World Cup and in the midfield Casey Laulala gets a crack at outshining Conrad Smith.
With plenty on the line, it will be of no surprise if tempers fray.

"There's all sorts of things that go on out in the field that perhaps you wouldn't say or do if you weren't on it," McCaw admitted. "But that's the way it is. You walk off it and leave it. That's the great thing about playing guys you know so well -- you go hard as you would against anyone and then walk off and have a laugh about it. That's what sport is about."

Reports have filtered back to the Crusaders camp that the Hurricanes ringed this match before the season began as the one they want to win.

McCaw said he was aware of such talk but said he won't be sledging on the field.
"Some guys do, but I'm one who does not get into that," he said."Perhaps there is the odd little comment when you get up from the breakdown and Andrew Hore is a bit of a character like that. I'm not big into it. Nah, not much."

The history books favour the Crusaders, who have won 11 of their 14 clashes since 1996, but they remain edgy about the Hurricanes who are fresh off the bye.

"Sure, we have talked about it this week that we have to bring the game we need -- deny them the ball and match them physically which we have to do in most games. It's probably more important this week."

HURRICANES v CRUSADERS
Westpac Stadium, Wellington
Last meeting: Crusaders 23-13 in Christchurch, round 12, 2007

Always a fierce and eventful clash, with `Canes backrowers Jerry Collins, Rodney So'oialo and Chris Masoe going at it against their All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw and co. It's a big test of the fifth-placed Hurricanes seeking a fifth straight win but it's hard to see them beating Robbie Deans' undefeated Crusaders, who have been imperious under the new ELVs. The Crusaders regain fullback Leon McDonald from injury while Ma'a Nonu's back from suspension for the home team. Lock Ali Williams has been a great gain for an already mighty Crusaders pack, usually ensuring lineout dominance. Dan Carter is in good form and gives his team a strong edge as playmaker.

Hurricanes: Cory Jane, Ma'a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Tamati Ellison, Shannon Paku, Jimmy Gopperth, Piri Weepu, Rodney So'oialo (captain), Chris Masoe, Jerry Collins, Jason Eaton, Craig Clarke, Neemia Tialata Andrew Hore, John Schwalger.
Reserves: Hikawera Elliot, Tim Fairbrother, Jeremy Thrush, Scott Waldrom, Alby Mathewson, Tane Tu'ipulotu, Hosea Gear.

Crusaders: Leon MacDonald, Scott Hamilton, Casey Laulala, Tim Bateman, Kade Poki, Daniel Carter, Andrew Ellis, Mose Tuiali'i, Richard McCaw (captain), Kieran Read, Ali Williams, Brad Thorn, Greg Somerville, Corey Flynn, Ben Franks.
Reserves: Ti'i Paulo, Wyatt Crockett, Michael Paterson, Nasi Manu, Kahn Fotuali'i, Caleb Ralph, Sean Maitland.

Previews of Friday's Super 14 matches

Super 14 Round 6
Friday 21 March

CRUSADERS v NSW WARATAHS
at AMI Stadium, Christchurch, 5.35pm
Last meeting: Crusaders 34-33 in Sydney, March 2007

A litmus test for the Waratahs who are three from four this year but who are yet to convince the masses of their title bona fides. Last week's break may have come at a good time after a scratchy win over the Brumbies in round four and the team is reasonably settled, save for still missing winger Timana Tahu (hamstring). Lock Dean Mumm replaces Will Caldwell in the starting XV with ex-Queensland half Josh Valentine coming on to the bench. The Crusaders were in second gear against the Cheetahs but did look vulnerable against the Force a fortnight ago. They'll miss versatile fullback Leon MacDonald (rested) but Scott Hamilton - who moves from wing to No.15 and Caleb Ralph - who'll wear the No.11, are seasoned performers. The Waratahs played arguably their best match against the Crusaders in an otherwise ordinary 2007, going down by a point in Sydney. They'll be competitive but look to be a class below Robbie Deans' troops.

Crusaders: Leon MacDonald, Scott Hamilton, Casey Laulala, Tim Bateman, Kade Poki, Daniel Carter, Andrew Ellis, Mose Tuiali'i, Richard McCaw (capt), Kieran Read, Ali Williams, Brad Thorn, Greg Somerville, Corey Flynn, Ben Franks.
Res: Ti'i Paulo, Wyatt Crockett, Michael Paterson, Nasi Manu, Kahn Fotuali'i, Caleb Ralph, Sean Maitland.

Waratahs: Lachie Turner, Alfi Mafi, Ben Jacobs, Tom Carter, Lote Tuqiri, Kurtley Beale, Brett Sheehan, Wycliff Palu, Phil Waugh (capt), Rocky Elsom, Dan Vickerman, Dean Mumm, Matt Dunning, Adam Freier, Sekope Kepu.

McCaw on the money with school pupils (nzherald)

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10498986

He's only 27, but battered All Black captain Richie McCaw has already got a rest home firmly in his sights.

And not in his beloved Canterbury, but the enemy territory of Auckland no less.
In the shameless use of a celebrity, McCaw was yesterday put before students at Christchurch's Riccarton High School by Westpac bank to talk about money management.
The fact he earns far more than most of them ever will didn't seem to matter.
The "Westpac ambassador" revealed he's hoping investments he makes now will put him in good financial stead after he's hung up the boots.

"The main thing is an investment in a rest home in Auckland, which isn't for me, but ... hopefully for a long time ahead it will give me income so that I can do all right."

Investing hasn't always been smooth sailing for him, he admits _ he once put money into a firm that went "belly-up".
He reckons KiwiSaver sounds pretty good, but admits he's not in it himself.

"I haven't found out too much about it to be honest."

McCaw reckons he was always a good saver, putting money he earned from working on his dad's farm into a term deposit while boarding at Otago Boys' High School.

By 17, he had saved enough to buy his prized first car _ a Mazda 323. It was a great feeling, he says, having bought it himself.

Now in the prime of his life as an All Black, his money goes on mortgage repayments, travel, dining and cellphone bills. His worst financial "slow leak" is lollies.
When he sat down with an adviser and did his first budget a while back, it was "a real eye-opener".

"When I sat down with him it was three times more [spending] than what I thought it was".

Students who sat through the seminar, largely presented by a Westpac staffer, seemed to have their minds on things other than money-management when they got a chance to ask McCaw questions.

So what's he going to do after rugby, the students wanted to know.
"I have quite a lot [of ideas] but it keeps changing," McCaw says."The one philosophy I have got is to keep your eyes open to anything. When the time comes I will have a pretty good idea of what spins my wheels and what doesn't."
****
It has nothing to do with the lollies, but it's quite interesting too :

Crusaders outrun Cheetahs

http://www.rugbyheaven.com.au/news/super14/crusaders-outrun-cheetahs/2008/03/15/1205472154606.html

The Crusaders have smashed the Cheetahs 55-7 in their Super 14 rugby match at AMI Stadium in Christchurch.
The home side, leading the Super 14 table, had the bonus try on the board by the 25th minute, running in five first half tries to lead 33-0 at the break and added a further four in the second half.

All five of the Crusaders first half tries went to the backs with Sean Maitland, Casey Laulala, Dan Carter, Leon Macdonald and Scott Hamilton getting on the scoresheet.
It was much the same in the second half as Hamilton and Laulala added second tries along with replacement back Caleb Ralph while hooker Ti'i Paulo was the only forward to get on the scoresheet.

Daniel Carter converted five tries while the only joy for the Cheetahs was an intercept try to Jongi Nokwe.

Cheetahs Skinned By Nine of the Best
March 15, 2008

The Crusaders have overwhelmed the Cheetahs 55-7 at AMI Stadium tonight to cement their position at the top of the Rebel Sport Super 14 standings.

On a mild night well suited to expansive rugby, the visiting South Africans were given a lesson as the Crusaders scored nine tries to one, to totally blow away a willing but seriously out-gunned opponent.

The Cheetahs were rocked almost from the opening minute, when Crusaders centre Casey Laulala was denied by the sideline chalk as he slid across for what would have been the home side’s first try.

While the flag of the assistant referee saved the Cheetahs then, the movement proved to be an ominous sign of what was to come – with the Crusaders collecting their try-scoring bonus point within 26 minutes, and having piled on five tries by halftime, where they led 33-0.

“We took away their belief early by shutting them out of the game, and that was important,” Crusaders coach Robbie Deans says.“By hitting them so hard in the opening minutes, it removed their hopes that they could win, and would no doubt have impacted on the enthusiasm they brought to the game.”

While the Cheetahs approached Christchurch having failed to win from their first four games, they had scored 11 tries during that period – the third best in the league, showing a particular liking for scoring from open play.

In the Crusaders, however, they met the master of that particular class; with the visitors simply unable to cope with the quick recycling skills, and the width of the field attack, that the home side employed.

“We always felt that if we could keep the ball going, and move their big men around, they’d struggle to combat it,” Crusaders skipper Richard McCaw says. “I was really pleased with the way we started. We muscled up early and got on the front foot. Because of that, it was always going to be difficult for them.”

The speed of the Crusaders recycle did for the Cheetahs in the team’s opening try, with 19-year-old winger Sean Maitland being given a clear run to the line after a super cut-out pass from fullback Leon MacDonald.

It proved to be a recurring theme of the night.

Although Laulala was denied in the opening minute, the Cheetahs couldn’t dodge a second bullet in the 16th minute, when Daniel Carter poked a kick in behind the fast advancing defensive line, which the Crusaders centre won the race to for the try.

Try number three came in the 19th minute when a Cheetahs attack broke down on halfway, and Crusaders halfback Andrew Ellis hacked the ball down field.

Although players from both sides converged on the bobbling ball near the Cheetahs line, it ended up spewing back over the goal-line where Carter was first to it, and claimed the prize.

MacDonald then wrapped up the bonus point in the 26th minute, supporting a jinking run by Stephen Brett that opened up the Cheetahs defence.

Unfortunately the break was Brett’s last positive act in the game as he injured the AC joint in his shoulder shortly afterwards.

The damage has been diagnosed as a “medium term” injury, which could mean a period of eight weeks or more on the sidelines for the talented Crusaders pivot.

Even in Brett’s absence, the visitors were still under the pump, and the Cheetahs didn’t help themselves just before halftime when they lost a lineout on their own throw.

The mistake was duly punished by the Crusaders, who again out-flanked the visitors with the speed of their recycle, which allowed winger Scott Hamilton to post a try against the South African team for the third straight season.

It was Hamilton who obliged again immediately after halftime.

The try was practically a replay of his first effort; with the Cheetahs again left gasping by the speed of the Crusaders recycle as the home side advanced from the 33-0 halftime lead to 38-0.

As the second half progressed, the game predictably lost its shape with the contest effectively settled, and the mistake rate grew.

It was from one of these that the Cheetahs gained their only points, with the speedy winger Jongi Nokwe correctly anticipating an ambitious pass from Crusaders prop Wyatt Crockett, latching onto the ball to claim an easy try.

There was still time for three more tries in the final quarter, with Crusaders hooker Ti’i Paulo celebrating his first ever start, by scoring in the corner after another strong team build-up.

Laulala added a second, en-route to taking the team’s internal Player of the Day award; while Caleb Ralph also chimed in to claim the 57th of his Super rugby career, moving to within two of the competition record held by Doug Howlett.

The injury to Brett was a dampener, but the rest of the Crusaders side emerged from the game unscathed.

The team’s resources will even be bolstered for the Good Friday visit of the NSW Waratahs as winger Kade Poki is expected to be available again following his hamstring injury.

“Next week is a great opportunity, but we’ll get to work on that tomorrow,” Deans says.“For now, we have put in a pretty good performance, and it’s important that we enjoy the moment. The guys have earned that!”

The five points the Crusaders secured – their fourth try-scoring bonus point from five starts – also furthered the team‘s buffer at the top of the standings, especially after the previously third placed Blues were upset 17-27 by the Western Force at Albany earlier in the day.

At AMI Stadium, Christchurch, March 15

The Crusaders are fast closing in on becoming the first team in Super rugby history to break the 5000-point barrier.
As the side awaits tomorrow night's visit of the Cheetahs to AMI Stadium, the Crusaders require just a further 91 points to pass this milestone.
So far on the 13th Crusade, the side has accumulated 139 points from four outings at an average of 34.75 per match.....

Last meeting: Crusaders 49-28 in Bloemfontein, February 24, 2007

First versus last and should be a formality for the Crusaders, especially as Cheetahs coach Naka Drotske has made eight changes in naming a youthful side. However, the Crusaders have just completed a massive amount of travel - two weeks in South Africa, then Perth on the way home - and Robbie Deans has made six changes of his own to "freshen up" his side. Crusaders No.8 Nasi Manu and hooker Ti'i Paulo will make their first Super 14 starts among five changes in the forwards, none of them injury-related. The Cheetahs gave the Chiefs a run for their money last week and the ingredients for an upset are there if the Crusaders are complacent, however ridiculous that might sound.

Richie: “It’s About Composure”

http://www.crfu.co.nz/main/index.cfm/1,111,2604,0,html/Richie-It-s-About-Composure

March 10, 2008

The Crusaders were not at their best during yesterday’s 29-24 win over the Western Force in Perth, but skipper Richard McCaw is adamant that his side would not have prevailed had they not continued to believe.

Even when trailing 12-24, 10 minutes into the second half, McCaw says the Crusaders didn’t lose their faith.

“It was about keeping our composure, and doing the right things,” McCaw said.“We’d made quite a few mistakes, and rushed things a fair bit, but we always knew we were in the game, and quite capable of winning it if we got our act together.”

The Crusaders did that, setting the Force back on its heels with two tries in as many minutes, which transformed the game, tying the scores at 24-24.

“I’m proud of the guys for the way they hung in there,” McCaw says.“Games like this are a great test of a team’s character, in terms of whether it stays together or falls away when things get tough. We hung together, and got the result because of that.”

Both McCaw and Crusaders coach Robbie Deans acknowledged that their side endured its flat patches after traveling back across the Indian Ocean from South Africa.

“It’s not an excuse, but we certainly weren’t as accurate as we’d like to have been, and I suppose you could suggest that the travel played a part in that,” McCaw said.“Away wins are especially important in this competition – I still reckon some people just don’t quite appreciate how tough it is to win on the road – so we’re leaving Perth pretty happy!”

The win may have come at a cost, with the in-form No 8 Mose Tuiali’i being forced from the field shortly before the finish due to an ankle complaint.

Tuiali’i had enjoyed another imposing afternoon, but now might be in a race against the clock in order to be fit to face the Cheetahs at AMI Stadium on Saturday night.

Meanwhile Scott Hamilton had a good reason to smile after the final whistle. The game was the Glenmark winger’s 50th for the Crusaders.

Daniel Carter versus Matt Giteau was the big duel at Subiaco Oval last night, but Ryan Cross was the man to use the big occasion to ingratiate himself with the next Wallabies coach.Robbie Deans was last night cursing Cross for how he showed up the Crusaders in the first half, but in a few months' time will hark back to his performance when working out his first Test line-up as the Wallabies coach.... McCaw sends scare through Crusaders camp (+ round 4 preview)

http://www.rugbyheaven.com.au/articles/2008/03/06/1204779951364.html

All Blacks skipper Richie McCaw has put a scare through the Crusaders' camp ahead of this Sunday's Super 14 clash with the Western Force, leaving today's training session early with apparent groin soreness.
The dominant openside flanker left the training session at Perth's Wesley college in apparent discomfort, and was later pulled from scheduled media events.

But a Crusaders spokesman said the early departure from training had been precautionary, and McCaw was likely be fit and available for the clash with the Force at Subiaco Oval on Sunday afternoon.

Australian rugby fans' grins grow wider with every Robbie Deans triumph - perhaps apart from those in Perth this week. Deans' second placed Crusaders haven't been troubled by the Brumbies, Bulls, Stormers or ELVs in 2008, although the Force will be desperate to wipe last year's demolition job from their memories. The seventh placed Force eked out two wins from three on their South African jaunt but have been far from convincing in the wake of the Matt Henjak sacking. Star five-eighth Matt Giteau comes up against All Black champion Dan Carter in what could be the beginning of a long rivalry at Super 14 and Test level. Deans says he won't be watching Giteau. No, really. Not even a little bit.

Force: Cameron Shepherd, Scott Staniforth, Ryan Cross, Lachlan Mackay, Drew Mitchell, Matt Giteau, Chris O'Young, Richard Brown, David Pocock, Tamaiti Horua, Nathan Sharpe, Tom Hockings, AJ Whalley, Tai McIsaac, Gareth Hardy.Res: Luke Holmes, Troy Takiari, Sam Wykes, Matt Hodgson, James Stannard, Scott Daruda, Josh Tatupu.

Cape Crusaders Clean Up!

http://www.crfu.co.nz/main/index.cfm/1,111,2595,0,html/Cape-Crusaders-Clean-Up

March 1, 2008
The Crusaders have done it!

Tonight’s 22-0 success over the Stormers before over 40,000 in the auditorium at Newlands in Cape Town means that – for the first time since 2002 when the eighth Crusade was completed unbeaten – the Crusaders have departed South Africa unscathed.

Keeping the South Africans scoreless represented a further slice of history, as the Stormers had never before drawn a blank during a Super rugby contest.

It was also the second time in two years - following on from last year's 53-0 massacre of the Force - that the Crusaders had ensured an opponent failed to trouble the scorers in a Super rugby match.

The historical footnote aside, the Crusaders effort on defence should not be under-rated according to skipper Richard McCaw.

“Plenty of people talk about scoring in this competition, but it is defence that wins the big matches and makes the difference,” McCaw says.“We saw that tonight. The way the guys dug in to deny them was outstanding. They are a good team and certainly didn’t cave in at all. To keep them to blot was a big effort.”

The near capacity Newlands crowd was treated to just two tries, one from Crusaders halfback Andrew Ellis in the 24th minute, and another from winger Sean Maitland in the 52nd.

Ellis bagged his try sniping from close range at a ruck as the Crusaders attacked after soaking up some strong early pressure from the home side.

His score, backed up by two penalty goals from Daniel Carter, enabled the Crusaders to bank an 11-0 halftime advantage, which they doubled after the break.

The second try of the night allowed Maitland to kick start his Super rugby try-scoring tally, in a match he wasn’t originally slated to start.

He was only on the field from the kick off due to a mishap pre-game, which saw his fellow 20-year-old winger Kade Poki – who scored his maiden try for the Crusaders last week – ruled out due to a hamstring strain that was sustained during the warm up.

Like Poki at Loftus seven days earlier, Maitland had his uncertain moments under the high ball, especially in the game’s early stages, but he warmed to the task and made no mistake when presented with a pin-point cross field kick from Daniel Carter in the 52nd minute.

“I heard the call so I knew the kick was coming,” Maitland recalled later.“It was a great kick. I had the easy bit – catching it!”

The 20-year-old’s modesty belied the pressure he was put under earlier on in the game, when targeted by Stormers kickers who repeatedly poked the ball in behind him, forcing the lanky winger and his Crusaders team-mates to turn around.

Unfortunately for the home side, who slumped to their third straight defeat of the competition, for each question they asked; the Crusaders had an answer.

Having posted his first Super rugby try, Maitland could easily have had a second three minutes later, being given a free run to the goal-line after the Crusaders attacked from deep in their own half.

It was the most flowing attacking movement of the game, but was ruled out by assistant referee Brett Bowden who had spied winger Caleb Ralph’s foot graze the sideline as he initiated the assault by beating his marker.

“It was close, I’m not sure whether I touched it [the sideline] or not, but he [Bowden] seemed pretty sure,” Ralph said.

A third Crusaders try could have blown the game open.

Instead, the Stormers continued to press, only to be denied by the resilience of the Crusaders defence.

“They’re a good team. You saw that in the way they continued to come at us even when the game was beyond them. Sometimes the intensity can drop in that situation, but there’s certainly didn’t,” Crusaders coach Robbie Deans told the assembled media post-match. “If they can continue to show that sort of spirit and resilience, they’re going to hurt a few teams and get their share of wins before this competition is done.”

Nor was Deans disappointed that his troops were held scoreless for the final 21 minutes of the game, saying that said more about the tenacity of the Stormers than any deficiency on behalf of the Crusaders.

“We would have liked a bonus point if we could have achieved it, but we’re still delighted [with the outcome],” he said. “In this last week, we’ve achieved something – in terms of being undefeated in South Africa – that some very good Crusaders teams [including the 2005 & 2006 Super rugby champions] were unable to do. Importantly, we’ve also grown as a group, and hopefully will continue to do so as the competition develops.”

Importantly, the Crusaders also appear to have come through an exceedingly physical contest relatively unscathed.

Aside from Poki’s injury which means he is likely to be unavailable for the next match, the Crusaders should have a full muster to call on, with winger Scott Hamilton set to return after missing Cape Town due to a personal circumstance.

Lock Ali Williams dislocated his finger during the game but had it quickly put back in place.

“There’s some pretty sore boys in there [pointing to the changing shed],” McCaw said.“They’re tired, but they’re happy, and they’ve every right to be!”

While tough for the home faithful and side to swallow – & especially for the latter, given that the Stormers players will have to resurface at 5am tomorrow morning to begin their trek to Australasia, via Hong Kong; tonight’s outcome continued the Crusaders’ recent love affair with Cape Town.

The side relished the opportunity to prepare in the shadow of the stunning Table Mountain prior to bashing the then Erasmus-coached Cheetahs up on the high veldt at Bloemfontein last year.

Newlands also provided plenty of profit on the visits of 2003 and 2005 where, in both instances, the Crusaders piled on 51 points during handsome victories.

But the value of tonight’s performance is perhaps best taken in the context of the Crusaders’ most recent game at Newlands, in 2006, when the side sank to a shock 17-28 loss to the Stormers.

Incredibly, that was the Stormers only home win from seven home ties during the inaugural Rebel Sport Super 14 – and it was gained against that competition’s eventual champions.

Having lost their first two, the Stormers were equally as desperate tonight as they had been two years ago. History may also prove that the Erasmus-coached outfit is a better unit than its counterpart of two years ago, which makes the competition points that have been earned tonight pure gold.

Now it’s on to Perth, & an appointment at the one regular Super rugby home venue the Crusaders have yet to win at – Subiaco Oval, the ground of the Western Force.

The Crusaders and Force slugged out a 23-23 draw at their maiden meeting on the Australian western seaboard two years ago, with the memory of that gripping encounter sure to stir up feelings on both sides of the barricades ahead of the re-match on Sunday week.
