All Blacks and Crusaders captain Richie McCaw expects to make a decision on his rugby future within a month.

McCaw, who is set to play his first Investec Super Rugby match of the season against the Chiefs at Mount Maunganui on Friday night, was quizzed about his future after the Crusaders trained in Christchurch on Wednesday.

He is off contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union at the end of this year.

"I've been thinking about it and, hopefully, will have something sorted in the next month. I've always said it would be nice to have it done before the end of the Super 15."

McCaw has previously expressed an interest in staying in New Zealand, but he said it was important to make the right decision.

"It's a bit different this time – it's about making sure I make the decision right for the right reasons."
McCaw said contract details such as how long it would extend were being discussed.

"That's what we are talking about at the moment. I haven't signed anything because we're working through those sorts of things. When you get to 30 [years] you have to assess where you are at because in two or three years time that might be the finish of your playing career.

"You've got to make sure you weigh up where you're at and I've been talking to the New Zealand Union about that as well so that's where we are at."

McCaw said he talked very little to other star players such as Dan Carter who reportedly has been offered $2.2 million a season by French club Racing Metro.

"Everyone has got a different situation and you don't want to go putting unfair pressure on each other. You have to make your own decision and if you're making it because of someone else you're probably not going to make the right one.

"In saying that it's worth listening in with friends and family, but at the end of the day you have to make a decision that's going to suit you best."
